Music Monday: K.Flay
I've been in a super angsty mood lately so I've been diving back into some of my favorite K.Flay tracks. Even if you've never heard of her, you may recognize K.Flay as one of her songs has been featured in some NFL promotions recently. She is an indie rap artist whose music ranges from EDM anthems to introspective tracks that touch on relationships, substance abuse, and depression. Her voice and perspective are completely unique and this has allowed K.Flay to carve out her niche in the alternative and rap scenes alongside other strong and innovative female artists. Overall, she's a total badass and makes some killer jams to blast in your car, at the gym, or any time you think the world totally sucks.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of some of my favorite K.Flay tracks!
No Duh
This was the first K.Flay track I ever stumbled across. It's a fun twist on the average rapper's bragging track. The track features K.Flay's exceptional comedy and wordplay over an interesting pseudo-a capella style beat.
Highlight lyric: Feeling me moving the earth by millimeters with my words. Fuck what you heard, verses' tighter than Ernie and Bert.
FML
I never get tired of this song. In an interview with Nylon, K.Flay discusses the track saying "There’s often a very fine line between the things that make us happy & those that cause us some form of misery."
Highlight lyric: I've been feeling so blessed, but stressed all day. So what?
High Enough
High Enough is a more recent release from K.Flay and it's an absolute banger. Turns out love can be one Hell of a drug.
Highlight lyric: I used to like liquor to get me inspired but you look so beautiful, my new supplier.
It's Strange ft. Louis the Child
K.Flay performs the vocals on this Louis the Child track. This upbeat and retro-vibed EDM track deals with the confusing emotions one may face when they find themselves falling in love unexpectedly.
Highlight lyric: Head rolling back but I'm fai
Make Me Fade
This track has a more laid back vibe than some of the other tracks on this list. The lyrics deal with the complexities of utilizing drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism.
Highlight lyric: They think I've been messing with the wrong stuff. Nah, I've been messing with the right shit. Yeah, I fucking like it.
We Hate Everyone
We Hate Everyone is a sonically aggressive track that takes a satirical look at the blind rage that individuals struggling with depression can project onto their worlds. #relatable #content
Highlight lyric: Life would be easy if bitches just did what I told 'em.
Fvcking Crazy ft. Eligh and Grieves
This gritty track is a look at how complicated and destructive some relationships can become. On her RapGenius page, K.Flay says "It's sarcastic but honest. I hope."
Highlight lyric: If you wanna be my baby, get ready for some bullshit 'cause I'm like fucking crazy.
So Fast, So Maybe
"So Fast, So Maybe" is a jumpy track that exudes anxiety. The lyrics reflect on the nauseatingly unstoppable fast pace of life and urges listeners to go through life doing what they want as they may not always have the same drive or the same opportunities.
Highlight lyric: Little did I know shit would get so crazy so fast.
Can't Sleep (Vanic Remix)
Vanic has done a handful of trap remixes of K.Flay songs that are all bops. This remix of Can't Sleep is one of my favorites for adding a fast pace to the track while maintaining the overall vibe of the original.
Highlight lyric: The night's just long enough for me to build it up and let it fall apart.
