Music Monday: Sad Songs

Jessie Reyez's raw vocals make it feel like she's right there in the room with you, helping you through your struggle with her music. She is a real badass who isn't afraid to tell you how she feels.

I've been feeling pretty down lately, and the ultra-upbeat music that I've been listening to recently feels like it's mocking me for not keeping up with it. With a few rainy days ahead, it's time to dive into some of my favorite songs for when I'm feeling down. These songs aren't all necessarily sad, but they still feel relatable and remind me that I'm not alone.

If you're looking for some tunes to keep you company when you're feeling down, here's an eclectic playlist of wistful, downbeat tracks ranging from '70s British beat-rock to modern pop.

"Send in the Sun" by Watsky

This track from one of my favorite artists is more poem than song, but it always hits close to home when I'm feeling low.

Highlight lyric: "There ain't no suffering in life that don't ease with the passage of time."

"Otherside (Remix)" by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis ft. Fences

The chorus in this raw, authentic rap track always rips my heart out.

Highlight lyric: "The sky gets heavy when you are underneath it."

"Liquor Store Blues" by Bruno Mars ft. Damian Marley

Even the perpetually bouncy Bruno Mars gets down every now and then.

Highlight lyric: "Get messed up today, I'll be okay tomorrow."

"i hate u, i love u" by Gnash ft. Olivia O'Brien

Even if I don't have a specific person in mind with this song, it always feels so real.

Highlight lyric: "Everyone I do right does me wrong. So every lonely night, I sing this song."

"Bastards" by Kesha

Sweet, badass, and melancholy all in one. Kesha is my queen and I love this song.

Highlight lyric: "I could fight forever, but life's too short."

"Cough Syrup" by Young the Giant

For when you feel like you're losing control.

Highlight lyric: "Life's too short to even care at all."

"XO TOUR Llif3" by Lil Uzi Vert

Lil Uzi Vert proves that rappers don't have to be hard and emotionless to be successful. This track is low energy but still a total banger.

Highlight lyric: "She says I'm insane, now. I might blow my brains out."

"Pavlove" by Fall Out Boy

Fall Out Boy's music has gotten me through a lot of dark times. This one's a classic.

Highlight lyric: "I want to make you as lonely as me."

"Still Alive" by GLaDOS and Jonathan Coulton

This soft track from the credits of the Portal video game always lifts me up when I'm feeling low.

Highlight lyric: "There's no sense crying over every mistake."

"On Your Porch" by The Format

This melancholy indie track has been a favorite of mine for years and I don't see that changing any time soon.

Highlight lyric: "What's left to lose? I've done enough. And if I fail, well then I fail, but I gave it a shot."

"Having a Blast" by Green Day

Green Day is my favorite band of all time and this is definitely one of my favorite tracks from them. Some 90s punk rock always resonates with when I'm in a bad mood.

Highlight lyric: "This time I've really lost my mind and I don't care."

"Figures" by Jessie Reyez

A friend of mine introduced me to Jessie Reyez's music a few months ago and I've been obsessed ever since. This track is complete perfection and her vocals are simply stunning. The lyrics are simultaneously melancholy and empowering—I just can't get enough it.

Highlight lyric: "How in the fuck would you feel if you couldn't get me back?"

"Totally Fucked" from Spring Awakening

Spring Awakening is an emotional rollercoaster of a musical with plenty of amazing tracks for feeling a wide variety of sadnesses, but sometimes profanity is the only way to describe your current situation

Highlight lyric: "The thing that makes you really jump is that the weirdest sh*t is still to come."

"Sundrenched World" by Joshua Radin

Perfect for when you can't sleep and want some gentle violins.

Highlight lyric: "It couldn't be worse. Don't bother asking and here come the nerves."

"FML" by K. Flay

K. Flay is so awesome. This track perfectly highlights the tensions you can feel if you're trying to push away sadness and anxiety by partying.

Highlight lyric: "I've been feeling so blessed, but stressed all day. So what?"

"Soundtrack 2 My Life" by KiD CuDi

KiD CuDi's music has had a huge impact on most people my age. He was one of the first rap artists to be so open with his struggles and it's made a huge difference in so many lives.

Highlight lyric: "The moon will illuminate my room and soon I'm consumed by my doom."

"Young Dumb & Broke" by Khalid

This song is a bop and Khalid is such an endearing artist. His vibes always have me feeling laid back and nostalgic.

Highlight lyric: "Yeah, we're just young, dumb, and broke, but we've still got love to give."

"Teen Idle" by Marina and the Diamonds

Marina's voice is nothing short of totally angelic. So many of her songs hit me right in the gut, this one especially gets to me when I'm down.

Highlight lyric: "I wanna stay inside all day. I want the world to go away."

"Time to Pretend" by MGMT

My friends love MGMT's "Electric Feel," but this track will always be my favorite song of theirs.

Highlight lyric: "Yeah it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?"

"Holes" by Passenger

It's not uncommon that a Passenger song feels like it fills a hole in my heart.

Highlight lyric: "Sometimes you can't change and you can't choose. And sometimes it seems you gain less than you lose"

"Eff" by Bo Burnham

A great track for when you're angry at anyone and everyone.

Highlight lyric: "You've got sticks and stones to turn to, but I've got words to hurt you."

"Car Radio" by twenty one pilots

The acrobatic lyrics in this song are killer and I can always relate to having to battle dark thoughts when faced with too much quiet. The way the vocals escalate is an avalanche of emotion.

Highlight lyric: "I find over the course of our human existence one thing consists of consistence and it's that we're all battling fear."

"Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" by Bob Dylan

This song will just never get old. Bob Dylan sings straight into the soul.

Highlight lyric: "But I wish there was somethin' you would do or say to try and make me change my mind and stay but we never did too much talking anyway."

"Drag" by Day Wave

Day Wave produces his music in a way that makes it feel like there's so much space in the sound. That quality makes this track even more suited for when you're in a low mood.

Highlight lyric: "I know it's hard being around me."

"Drunk" by Ed Sheeran

Controversial opinion: Ed Sheeran has mastered the melancholy pop track; step aside Adele!

Highlight lyric: "What didn't kill me never made me stronger at all."

"Runnin' Away" by RDGLDGRN

Because sometimes all you feel like doing is running away from everything.

Highlight lyric: "If I die tonight, imma die runnin'. Problem keep coming and I'm runnin' away."

"Creep" by Radiohead

There's nothing like the classic angst of this track. It's perfect for those times when you're frustrated with feelings of not being good enough or not fitting in.

Highlight lyric: "What the hell am I doing here? I don't belong here."

"Ooh La La" by Faces

A perfect track for when you find yourself reflecting on past mistakes.

Highlight lyric: "I wish that I knew what I know now when I was stronger."

"Morning Song" by the Avett Brothers

Sometimes the sweet sound of the Avett Brothers' banjo is the only thing that can make me feel better.

Highlight lyric: "It's alright if you finally stop caring. Just don't go and tell someone that does."
